First 12 families call Blue Haven Avery home

Avery County families are putting down roots and helping rebuild Western North Carolina

Moving day at Blue Haven Avery

Avery County families are putting down roots and helping rebuild Western North Carolina

Two years ago, Western North Carolina faced one of the most devastating storms in its history. Hurricane Helene tore through Avery County, taking homes, businesses, and in many ways, the sense of stability families had spent lifetimes building.

But in the wake of the storm, something else took hold: communities came together, neighbors showed up for one another, and out of the wreckage, a vision began to form for something lasting.

A year and a half ago, Blue Haven broke ground on its first housing community, Blue Haven Avery — built to provide long-term stability for the people who make this region strong.

And now, we’re thrilled to share that Blue Haven Avery has become more than construction and blueprints. It’s become a place to call home.

The Blue Haven Avery Families

Over the past several months, the first 12 families have moved in. They’ve unpacked boxes, hung pictures, met their neighbors, and started to breathe a little easier. Alongside them, the remaining 26 families have now been selected and will continue moving in throughout the rest of 2026.

Every family who applied went through a thoughtful, thorough process including an in-depth application, an interview, vetting, and a careful review guided by a group of trusted local advisers alongside the Blue Haven board.

Each family was selected, not based solely on need, but also on heart. Each one has shown up for Avery County in their own way, demonstrating the beautiful, resilient spirit of this region. And each one is ready to keep showing up, to put down roots and invest in this community for years to come. That’s what Blue Haven is all about.

More Than a Neighborhood

Blue Haven Avery was never just about houses. It’s about making sure the people who care about this community get to stay rooted in it.

We’ve watched this place go from an empty lot to a place where kids ride bikes down the street and neighbors know each other’s names. What was once destroyed is now breathing new life, becoming a beacon of hope, of resilience, and of what Avery County’s future can look like.

Please join us in welcoming all 38 Blue Haven Avery families home.
